Session: Open Data and Open Government

An introduction

States around the world are placing Open Data and Open Government on their national agendas. But what do we mean by “open”? How might common themes from previous open movements apply to this new trend in government? From data catalogues to hackdays, we’ll review how open data is being obtained and used around the world. Are we demanding open data for transparency, or for the right to reuse it?

We’ll explore how governments are becoming open to online collaboration, transparency, and participation. With our ability to engage in networked communication, are we empowered to make fundamental changes to how government operates? How do we make our own difference while at the same time emerging institutions that represent our communities? Let’s discuss how we can overcome the challenges that are ahead for open government.
